How To Be a Green Witch...

Lebor Gabála Érenn: The Book of Invasions...

The collection can be divided into ten chapters: : Genesis... A retelling of the familiar Christian story of the creation, the fall of Man and the early history of the world. In addition to Genesis, the author draws upon several recondite works for many of his details (e.g. the Syriac Cave of Treasures), as well as the four Christian works mentioned earlier (i.e. St. Augustine's City of God, Orosius's Histories, Eusebius's Chronicle, and Isidore of Seville's Etymologies). This part also contains a genealogy derived via the Historia Brittonum from the 6th-century Frankish Table of Nations, itself relying partly on the 1st-century Germania of Tacitus. It gives the descent of the major peoples of Europe from three brothers. >>> Early history of the Gaels... Tower of Hercules (A Coruña, Galicia) This chapter begins by explaining that all mankind is descended from Adam through the sons of Noah. It tells us how Noah's son Japheth is the forebear of all Europeans, how Japheth's son Magog is the forebear of the Gaels and Scythians, and how Fénius Farsaid is the forebear of the Gaels. Fénius, a prince of Scythia, is described as one of 72 chieftains who built the Tower of Babel. His son Nel weds Scota, daughter of the Egyptian pharaoh Cingris, and they have a son named Goídel Glas. Goídel crafts the Goidelic (Gaelic) language from the original 72 languages that arose after the confusion of tongues. Goídel's offspring, the Goidels (Gaels), leave Egypt at the same time as the Israelites (the Exodus) and settle in Scythia. After some time they leave Scythia and spend 440 years travelling the Earth, undergoing trials and tribulations akin to those of the Israelites. The druid Caicher foretells that their descendants will reach Ireland. After seven years at sea, they settle in the Maeotian marshes. They then sail via Crete and Sicily and eventually conquer Iberia. There, Goídel's descendant Breogán founds a city called Brigantia, and builds a tower from the top of which his son Íth glimpses Ireland. Brigantia was the Roman name of Corunna in Galicia and Breogán's tower is possibly based on the Tower of Hercules, which was rebuilt at Corunna by the Romans. >>> Cessair... Bantry Bay, where Cessair and her followers are said to have landed According to the Lebor Gabála, the first people to arrive in Ireland are led by Cessair, daughter of Bith, son of Noah. They are told to go to the western edge of the world to escape the oncoming Flood. They set out in three ships, but two are lost at sea. They land in Ireland, at Dún na mBárc on Bantry Bay, forty days before the Flood. The only survivors are Cessair, forty-nine other women, and three men: Fintan mac Bóchra, Bith and Ladra. The women are split evenly among the men. Each also takes one as his wife: Fintán takes Cessair, Bith takes Barrfhind and Ladra takes Alba. However, Bith and Ladra soon die and Ladra is the first man buried in Ireland. When the Flood comes, Fintán is the only one to survive. He becomes a salmon and later an eagle and a hawk, living for 5,500 years after the Flood, whence he becomes a man again and recounts Ireland's history. In an earlier version of the tale, the first woman in Ireland is Banba. Banba, Fódla and Ériu were a trio of land goddesses and their husbands were Mac Cuill (son of hazel), Mac Cecht (son of the plough) and Mac Gréine (son of the Sun). It is likely that Cessair, the three men and their three wives are a Christianised replacement for them. Fintán/Mac Cuill may also be linked to the Salmon of Knowledge, which gains all the world's knowledge after eating nine hazelnuts that fell into a well. The women who accompany Cessair appear by their names to represent the world's ancestral mothers; they included Alba (ancestor of the Britons), Espa (Spanish), German (Germans), Gothiam (Goths), Traige (Thracians), and so forth. Thus "their arrival can be read as creating a microcosm of the whole world's population in Ireland". Several other companions echo the names of ancient Irish goddesses. >>> Partholón... "Tuan watches Nemed", illustration by Stephen Reid in T. W. Rolleston's Myths & Legends of the Celtic Race, 1911 Ireland is then uninhabited for 300 years, until a second group of people arrive. They are led by Partholón, who is descended from Noah through Magog. They sail to Ireland via Gothia, Anatolia, Greece, Sicily and Iberia. They include Partholón's wife Delgnat, their four chieftain sons, and others. When they arrive, there is only one open plain, three lakes and nine rivers. They clear four more plains and a further seven lakes burst from the ground. Named figures are credited with introducing cattle husbandry, ploughing, cooking, brewing, and dividing the island in four. They battle and defeat the mysterious Fomorians, who are led by Cichol Gricenchos. Eventually, Partholón and his people (now 5,000 men and 4,000 women) die of plague in a single week. Only one man, Tuan mac Cairill, survives. Like Fintán, he lives for centuries in a number of forms, so that he can recount Irish history. This chapter also includes the tale of Delgnat committing adultery with a servant. Partholón comes from Bartholomaeus (Bartholomew) and he is probably an invention of the Christian writers, possibly being borrowed from a character of that name in the Christian histories of Saint Jerome and Isidore. The Fomorians have been interpreted as a group of deities who represent the harmful or destructive powers of nature; personifications of chaos, darkness, death, blight and drought.[ >>> Nemed... Ireland is then uninhabited for 30 years, until a third group of people arrive. They are led by Nemed, who is also descended from Noah through Magog. They set out from the Caspian Sea in 44 ships but, after a year and a half of sailing, the only ship to reach Ireland is Nemed's. On board are his wife, his four chieftain sons, and others. During their time in Ireland, the Nemedians clear twelve plains and build two royal forts, and four lakes burst from the ground. They win four battles against the Fomorians. After Nemed and many others die of plague, the Nemedians are oppressed by the Fomorians Conand and Morc. Each Samhain, they must give two-thirds of their children, their wheat and their milk to the Fomorians. This tribute that the Nemedians are forced to pay may be "a dim memory of sacrifice offered at the beginning of winter, when the powers of darkness and blight are in the ascendant". Eventually, they rise up against the Fomorians and attack the Tower of Conand with 60,000 warriors (30,000 on sea and 30,000 on land), defeating Conand. Morc then attacks, and almost all of the Nemedians are either killed in the fighting or swept away by the sea. Only one ship of thirty men escapes. Some of them go "into the north of the world", some go to Britain and become the ancestors of all Britons, and some go south to Greece. >>> Fir Bolg... Ambassadors of the Fir Bolg and Tuath Dé meeting before the Battle of Moytura, illustration by Stephen Reid Those who went to Greece were enslaved by the Greeks and made to carry bags of soil and clay. After 230 years, they sail back to Ireland. They are known as the Fir Bolg (men of bags), and contain two sub-groups known as the Fir Domnann and Fir Gálioin. Led by their five chieftains, they divide Ireland into five provinces: Gann takes North Munster, Sengann takes South Munster, Genann takes Connacht, Rudraige takes Ulster and Slanga takes Leinster. A succession of nine High Kings rule over Ireland for the next 37 years. Tuatha Dé Danann Those who went into the north of the world are the supernaturally-gifted Tuatha Dé Danann (or Tuath Dé), who represent the main pagan gods of Ireland. They come to Ireland in dark clouds and land on Sliabh an Iarainn in the west,[30] bringing with them Four Treasures. They fight the Fir Bolg for the ownership of Ireland in the First Battle of Mag Tuired (Moytura). The Tuath Dé are victorious. In some versions, the Fir Bolg flee Ireland and settle on remote offshore islands, while in others they are granted the province of Connacht. Nuada, king of the Tuath Dé, loses his hand or arm in the battle and is thus no longer fit to be their king. He is replaced by Bres (a half-Fomorian), who becomes High King of Ireland. However, Bres mistreats the Tuath Dé and neglects his kingly duties. This may reflect the occasional supremacy of the powers of blight (the Fomorians) over the powers of growth (the Tuath Dé). After seven years, Dian Cecht the physician and Credne the metalsmith replace Nuada's hand/arm with a working silver one, and he re-takes the kingship. Though in some versions Nuada's arm is replaced with a silver one by Dian Cecht immediately, but he is still considered unfit to be king and Dian Cecht's son Cian replaces it with an arm made of flesh. The Tuath Dé then fight the Fomorians in the Second Battle of Moytura. Balor the Fomorian kills Nuada, but Balor's grandson Lugh kills him and becomes king. The Tuath Dé enjoy 150 years of unbroken rule. >>> Milesians... "The Coming of the Sons of Miled", illustration by Stephen Reid The tale of the Gaels is now resumed. Íth, who has spied Ireland from the top of Breogán's Tower, sails to the island with a group of men. He travels to Aileach Néit where he meets Ireland's three kings: Mac Cuill, Mac Cecht and Mac Gréine of the Tuath Dé. However, he is killed by unnamed attackers and his men return to Iberia. The Gaels set sail with a great force to avenge his death and take Ireland. They are referred to here as the Sons of Míl Espáine (or Milesians). The name Míl Espáine comes from the Latin Miles Hispaniae ("soldier of Hispania"). After they land, they fight against the combined forces of the Tuath Dé and Fomorians. On their way to Tara, they are met on three mountains by the aforementioned Banba, Fódla and Ériu – the wives of Ireland's three kings. Each goddess asks that the Gaels name the land after her. One of the Gaels, Amergin, promises that it shall be so. At Tara, they meet the three kings, who defend their claim to the joint kingship of the land. They ask that there be a three-day truce, during which the Gaels must stay a distance of nine waves from land. The Gaels agree, but once their ships are nine waves from Ireland, the Tuath Dé conjure up a great wind that prevents them from sailing back to land. However, Amergin calms the wind by reciting a verse. The surviving ships return to land and the two groups agree to divide Ireland between them. The Gaels take the world above, while the Tuath Dé take the world below (i.e. the Otherworld) and enter the sídhe mounds. Roll of the pagan kings of Ireland See also: List of High Kings of Ireland Modelled on the Biblical Books of Kings, this chapter recounts the deeds of various kings of Ireland, most of them legendary or semi-legendary, from the time of Éber and Érimón to the early 5th century of the Christian era. Roll of the Christian kings of Ireland A continuation of the previous chapter, it is the most accurate part of Lebor Gabála, being concerned with historical kings of Ireland whose deeds and dates are preserved in contemporary written records. --- Wikpedia.

A stray sod (Irish: fód seachrán) is a patch of grass or ground in Irish folklore believed to be enchanted by fairies, causing anyone who steps on it at night to become disoriented and lose their sense of direction, leading to aimless wandering until dawn.

The leannán sídhe are known for their dangerous, often vampiric behavior. In some traditions, they suck the life force from artists, poets, and other creative souls, draining their vitality in exchange for a muse-like inspiration.

Dryads are faerie maidens linked to a tree, usually an oak. If the tree dies the dryad also perishes.

Nymphs have a reputation for being hyper-sexual. They’re generally known as beautiful females, but unlike Sirens, they’re relatively harmless. Nymphs can be a bit mischievous like all types of fairies, but they don’t hurt humans. Sometimes they even fall in love with humans and become quite committed.

The 4 Gemstone Cities of the Tuatha de Dannan...

In faerie lore, the Four Cities are sacred realms of the High Faery, each associated with one of the four elements and a cardinal direction. They are often described as “node points of the wisdom-energy of the elements” and can be visited in inner journeys or invoked in ritual work geomancy.co+1. 1. Falias – The Earth City (North) Element: Earth Symbol: Stone of Death crowned with pale fire www.druidry-sfbayarea.net Description: A massive, ancient city of metallic towers topped with glowing crystals, standing in a place of no living creatures but deep life energy. At its heart is a meteoric rock that holds an endless stream of memories, opening the soul to wisdom and the depth of existence geomancy.co. Teacher: Morfesa geomancy.co. 2. Gorias – The Air City (East) Element: Air Symbol: The Dividing Sword www.druidry-sfbayarea.net Description: Nestled in an emerald valley with crystal cascades, white square buildings, and golden-roofed structures. It is a place of peace, industry, and beauty, with hangings of mythical creatures and a statue symbolizing the balance of intellect and gentleness geomancy.co. Teacher: Esras geomancy.co. 3. Finias – The Fire City (South) Element: Fire Elemental Faery: Gnomes www.earthwitchery.com Symbol: A Spear www.druidry-sfbayarea.net Description: An oasis of adobe huts and silvery trees in the desert, with an eternal light that never knows night. It is a place of cordial inhabitants and radiant energy geomancy.co. Teacher: Not named in the provided lore, but associated with the spear symbol. 4. Murias – The Water City (West) Element: Water Symbol: A Hollow filled with Water and Light www.druidry-sfbayarea.net Description: A realm of flowing water and light, representing the element’s fluidity and depth. It is linked to the cauldron of the Dagda in mythic tradition www.earthwitchery.com. Teacher: Not named in the provided lore. Mythic and Symbolic Significance These cities are tied to the Tuatha De Danann, the ancient Irish gods and goddesses who became the High Faery. They brought with them sacred tools of power — the stone, sword, spear, and cauldron — and from them came much of the Irish pantheon www.druidry-sfbayarea.net+1. In ritual practice, invoking these cities at the four quarters of a circle can open pathways to their wisdom and energy geomancy.co. In summary: Falias (Earth, North), Gorias (Air, East), Finias (Fire, South), and Murias (Water, West) form the gemstone cities of faerie — each a realm of elemental power, spiritual insight, and mythic heritage.

The Dagda, The All-father of the Tuatha de Dannan & His Family...

In some stories, Eochaid is considered his birth name, which means "the Horseman," while, of course, “The Dagda” is a title given to him by King Nuada when he took on leadership of the Tuatha de Danann. There are varying accounts of the Dagda's family members. In "Elfstroke" I have his seven children as being, --- Brighid (f.), Lugh (m.), Ogme (m.), Nuala (m.), Eire (f.), Fodla (f.) and Aonghus (m.). He is married to the warrior goddess the Morrighan. In Irish mythology, she was part of the trio of figures known as the three Morrígna, along with Badb and Macha — though many scholars believe Badb and Macha were simply manifestations of Morríghan herself. In "Elfstroke" I have her first name as Morrigna. It is stated of the Dagda, --- "He was a handsome head faerie god of the heathens. He was an earth-god to them because of the greatness of his magical power". In the Middle Irish language Coir Anmann (The Fitness of Names) says: Tales depict the Dagda as a figure of immense power. He is said to own a magic staff, club or mace which could kill nine men with one blow; but with the handle he could return the slain to life. He owned a cauldron and a magic harp. Dagda's staff In the tract found in the Yellow Book of Lecan, there were three items the Dagda named together, --- his staff (lorc), the shirt (léine) of protection from sickness, and the cloak (lumman) of shape-shifting and color-change. The "great staff" (lorg mór) had a smooth end which brought the dead back to life (He resuscitated his son Cermait Milbél with the smooth end.), but the staff's rough end caused instant death. The staff/club is also described in the Ulster Cycle narrative, Mesca Ulad, where it was called the "terrible iron staff" (lorg aduathmar iarnaidi). Cauldron The Cauldron of the Dagda is one of the Four Treasures of the Tuatha Dé Danann, of which it was said "an assembly used not to go unsatisfied from it". The cauldron "signified plenty and generosity". Hence, his magic cauldron was otherwise known as the coire ansic ("the un-dry cauldron"). Dagda's harp After Úaithne, the Dagda's harper was abducted by the Fomorians. The Dagda went to the enemy's hall and retrieved his magic harp, which had two names, according to the text of the Cath Maige Tuired ("Second Battle of Moytura"). And when the Dagda called upon his harp by its two names: "Come Daur Dá Bláo / Come Cóir Cetharchair / Come summer, come winter.." the harp leapt off the wall and came to him. The harp was forbidden by the Dagda from issuing any sound, unless thus called upon by the names, which translate to "Oak of Two Meadows" and "the Four Angled Music". Hence, the harp was a richly ornamented magic harp made of oak which, when the Dagda played it, put the seasons in their correct order. The Dagda had the skill to play the "Three Strains" (joy, sorrow, sleep) which he used to immobilize the Fomorians and escape. Other possessions He possessed two pigs, one of which was always growing whilst the other was always roasting, and ever-laden fruit trees. He is also described as being the owner of a black-maned heifer that was given to him for his labours prior to the Second Battle of Moytura. When the heifer calls her calf, all the cattle of Ireland taken by the Fomorians as tribute graze. --- Wikpedia.

The History of Midsummer's Eve...

There is evidence that the summer solstice has been culturally important since the Neolithic era, with many ancient monuments throughout Eurasia and the Americas aligned with sunrise or sunset on the summer solstice. In the Julian calendar used in the ancient Roman world, the date of the summer solstice was the 24th of June and Marcus Terentius Varro wrote in the 1st century BC that the Romans saw this as the middle of summer. In the city of Rome, it was the festival of the goddess Fortuna. People thronged the River Tiber and rowed in boats to the temples of Fortuna; "after undisclosed rituals they rowed back, garlanded and inebriated". The Julian calendar had a flaw in that the solstices and equinoxes gradually fell on earlier dates. At the First Council of Nicaea (325), the Christian Church set the date of the spring equinox to the 21st of March on the Julian calendar, for the purpose of calculating Easter. This also brought the date of the summer solstice forward to the 20th of June. --- Wikpedia.

Hmmm...

(Giggle. Snort.) It seems that some misguided human souls think all faeries are beautiful... (Their worlds ARE beautiful) And... Well, --- some are truly beautiful. But, a lot, --- tsk-tsk, just aren't. The Unseelie especially, often AREN'T!!!... They are the boggles, scags, breaknecks, kelpies, redcaps, druggars, goblins, hags, fetches, fire-drakes, knockers, burnt-tails, raw-head-and-bloody-bones', spunks, boggarts, imps, men-in-the-oaks, bonelesses, incubusses, buttery spirits, sucubusses, hob-headlesses, buggaboos, spectres, wraithes, gringes, dopple-gangers, yeth-hounds, water leapers, vila, tritons, vodyanoi, gargoyles, fox spirits, pixies, salmanders, winged panthers, changelings, bull-beggars, spriggans, death-hearses, bolls, sirens, black dogs, giants, satyrs, leshys, pookas, noggles, krakens, manticores, madcaps, fiends, fates, swarths, bygorns, gringylows, bunyips, lamia, tengu, harpies, nixies, trolls, hobthrusts, shocks, salamanders and dragons of the for elements, --- water, fire, earth and air, of course. (To name only a few, --- believe it, or not!) ;)

Below is a little imaging about my paranormal faerie novel "ELFSTROKE"... ;)

May Murphy...

Aonghus Mac Og...

A Male Myad...

A Female Myad...

I'm working on this... It takes place in ancient Eire and in the magnificent faerie lands (seen in the images, below) where the Dagda, the All-father, the High King of the Tuatha de Dannan, rules. Aonghus Mac Og, his seventh child, faerie god of love, youth and beauty, is the hero of "ELFSTROKE". Hmmm... The Bad Faeries are rebelling, and they're desperate. Queen of the Bad Faeries, Mab, has her blue hands full. There is a plague of impotency in the lands of the Unseelie. The Bad Faeries are convinced that bringing back the lovely and fragile extinct faerie race of pleasure slaves, the Myads, would be the remedy. Mab has her scientists working on a plan which has as it's basis using Aonghus as a sire and the beautiful human May Murphy, who has considerable Myad blood, as a vessel. Mab's problem: how to use her evil magic to get them together and somehow harvest their Myad offspring. Of course, Mab is as unscrupulous and manipulative a faerie queen who ever lived!

A darling little faerie hut!

OKAY. OKAY. Who ARE The Fay???...

That's a question that's pretty hard to answer... According to some thought, there are two types of life: corporeal and in corporeal, --- or earthly and solid and spirit and unsolid. Faeries belong to the later type of life. It is believed that they perhaps "put on" physical form for the benefit or detriment of humans. Yes, --- the detriment, for many, many of the fay ARE NOT NICE. They are definitely NOT cute and cherubic sweeties, as they were thought to be and painted in pictures in Victorian Times. According to folklore, there are two governments of faeries: the Seelie Court, or the Good Fay, and the Unseelie Court, or the Bad Fay. According to some folklore and Shakespeare, King Oberon and Queen Titiana rule over the Good Fay and Mab, the Blue Faerie Queen. rules over the Bad Faeries. >>> Where did the Fay come from?... Some say they're extraterrestrials who came to earth in "dark ships" (cloaked?) eons ago. Others say they're evil spirits, demons from hell and fallen angels, or pagan gods. Others say they're the dead, or simply primitive nature spirits. >>> Will I ever see them?... According to folklore, seeing faeries as if you were looking at any solid object is so incredibly, incredibly rare that's it's hardly worth talking about, --- one person in many, many, many millions. Those who truly DID see faeries with their actual human eyes were, according to stories, whisked away by the fay immediately because faeries don't like to be seen! Some humans said they "saw'" the fay with an "inner eye," and that they sensed faeries just out of their actual eyesight. But, some people will never, ever have any faerie contact, --- the cruel of heart, the greedy, the spiteful and selfish. The fay love the very unselfish humans who will give and give without ever expecting anything back, who are gentle, heroic and strong, who will fight endlessly to protect the helpless and innocent and those who tenderly love animals and nature. >>> Are the Fay still with us?... Folklore says that they were everywhere in the Celtic Isles centuries and centuries ago and actually practically every nation and culture has tales of faeries, but that the fay have dwindled greatly because modernization and technology are their most serious mortal enemies. They have said, very sadly, and repeated and repeated that, --- "We go. We go..." But, do they REALLY GO???!!!... Faeries are very capricious and unpredictable. They delight in being that way!!! >>> WELLLLLLLLL!!!!!... NOW. that you know a bit about the fay, whether you believe they're REAL is REALLY, REALLY very much up to YOU!!!

The rulers of the Seelie Court, --- King Oberon and Queen Titiana and some of their court...

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't pour poison on the breast of our Mother, The Earth!!!...

Far gentler ways to get rid of weeds are: A gallon of vinegar, two cups of Epsom salts, and a 1/4 cup of dish soap make a very effective weed killer. I've killed poison ivy and tree-of-heaven, a noxious weed tree that has a corrosive sap that kills all other foliage around it, with bleach. I cut it to ground level and poured the bleach right on it and then covered it with a plate. It died and didn't come back. The nice part bleach is that it's earth-friendly. It dissipates in 24 hours. ;)

Isn't He Absolutely Beautiful???...

This is what I imagine Aonghus Mac Og, the Tuatha De Dannan god of youth, love and beauty, looking like in my novel, "Elfstroke". He's actually one of the Daoine Sidhe, a old Gaelic term for faerie. In his case it meant the highest of fae nobility.

The "Green Life" Is Such Fun...

I can hardly remember when I wasn't interested in plants. I love it all, - from wild woodlands where everything grows in a tangled jumble, to sculptured, formally structured gardens, like you might see on a castles grounds. [Although, I must confess a definite preference toward the wild side of gardening.]

***Please note: I live in Zone 5, in the U.S.A., if you plan to garden, according to my suggestions, you might have to adjust to your own growing conditions. The weather where I live gets to be hot and humid to frigidly cold, - 90 degrees, F., in July, - and can reach lows of -15 in January with mild lovely Springs with plenty of rain, and brisk glorious Autumns.

It's amazing, the variety of plants that can be called herbs: Did you know that roses are considered herbs?... Yes, roses are, of course, used in aroma therapy, and they are among the edible flowers. [I have eaten rose hip jelly. It's delicious!]

Some of my favorite herbs are: oregano, basil [Ah, that basil pesto!], rosemary, lavender, sage [I love the purple stemmed variety.], Lemon balm, the wide variety of mints and the scented geraniums - rose, lemon, apple and mint.

If you know me at all, you know that I love folklore. There are many faerie folk tales involving woodlands and the "green" life. Faeries love all wild natural places, all over the world, and detest that their environment is constantly being taken over by civilization and mechanization. I believe that this is the main reason why faeries are so vulnerable to iron and metals, and why anything to do with the fey should never, ever include such things!

If you want to make a faerie garden it should be in a peaceful place with sun and shade and where there is water, even if it's just a bird bath. It should have pretty shiny rocks and, perhaps, ferns and moss. Include some garden sculptures of gnomes, winged faeries and animals.

Happy gardening!...

Queen Mab

Queen Mab, --- from "Romeo & Juliet"...

"O, then, I see Queen Mab hath been with you. She is the fairies' midwife, and she comes In shape no bigger than an agate-stone On the fore-finger of an alderman, Drawn with a team of little atomies Athwart men's noses as they lie asleep; Her wagon-spokes made of long spinners' legs, The cover of the wings of grasshoppers, The traces of the smallest spider's web, The collars of the moonshine's wat'ry beams, Her whip of cricket's bone; the lash of film; Her waggoner a small grey-coated gnat, Not half so big as a round little worm Pricked from the lazy finger of a maid: Her chariot is an empty hazelnut Made by the joiner squirrel or old grub, Time out o' mind the fairies' coachmakers. And in this state she gallops night by night Through lovers' brains, and then they dream of love; O'er courtiers' knees, that dream on court'sies straight, O'er lawyers' fingers, who straight dream on fees, O'er ladies' lips, who straight on kisses dream, Which oft the angry Mab with blisters plagues, Because their breaths with sweetmeats tainted are: Sometime she gallops o'er a courtier's nose, And then dreams he of smelling out a suit; And sometime comes she with a tithe-pig's tail Tickling a parson's nose as a' lies asleep, Then dreams he of another benefice: Sometime she driveth o'er a soldier's neck, And then dreams he of cutting foreign throats, Of breaches, ambuscadoes, Spanish blades, Of healths five-fathom deep; and then anon Drums in his ear, at which he starts and wakes, And being thus frighted swears a prayer or two And sleeps again. This is that very Mab That plaits the manes of horses in the night, And bakes the elflocks in foul sluttish hairs, Which once untangled, much misfortune bodes: This is the hag, when maids lie on their backs, That presses them and learns them first to bear, Making them women of good carriage: This is she—" — Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet," Act I, scene IV
